Full Steam Ahead to Glowing Skin!

I am both a steam bath and sauna aficionado. I really can't go through the day without having that hour session of sauna and steam. Every morning after a hard workout, I take and make time to do a long sauna and a steam bath. I have been doing this for nearly a year and I do not plan to stop anytime soon. I didn't really know the health benefits of the sauna and steam bath until I noticed a lot of positive effects it had on my skin, and that is just one of the positive results it had when I did a little research on it!
Skin cleansing is the method used to remove the surface dirt and other substances which accumulate and cause clogging of the pores of your skin. You should perform regular skin cleansing for a blemish free and healthy complexion.

Skin cleansing, in addition to other cleansing methods like colon cleansing and liver cleansing, can also be used effectively for the treatment of multiple chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, and pesticide and chemical exposure. It is also used to release stored toxins under the skin. In the skin cleansing method, the elimination of toxins is usually done by stimulating the lymphatic system. It also helps to improve blood circulation and the removal of dead cells from the skin.

You can use long handled natural bristle brush or loofah sponge for skin cleansing. Start from the soles of your feet and finish with the scalp. During skin cleansing, you need to brush in small circles from the feet towards the chest. You should avoid the sensitive areas such as face, breasts, and other sensitive areas during the skin cleansing process.

Since the contrast between the hot and cold water increases the micro circulation of the body tissues, it is better to do the skin cleansing before a contrast shower. This helps to bring nutrients and oxygen to the damaged tissues and aids in the elimination of waste and toxic substances. Contrast showers also helps to increase the number of white blood cells.

Sauna is widely used as a skin cleansing method. This is an ideal process for the elimination of the environmental chemicals stored in the fat cells. For skin cleansing using sauna, you should use a dry heat sauna that is not treated with the toxic chemicals.

After your sauna and steam bath, exfoliate with a brush or a loofah from your foot to your head. Use circular motions to scrub off dead skin and toxins!

THE CORRECT WAY TO TAKE A STEAMBATH

1. SHOWER -
after a hard workout when the body is hot, take a cool shower. Do not use water where you are near shivering. Just use water that is cooler than your body temperature and cool down. I personally don't like wearing anything in the Sauna room, I just bring my own beach towel (long enough to protect my whole body when I am lying face-down on the bench).

2. TEMPERATURE CHECK - For Steam Baths it is 43-46C (110-116F). The steam room in my gym doesn't have a temperature controller so I just set the knob on high. For the Sauna, the most beneficial temperature is 70-90C (160-194F).

3. HYDRATE -
Before going inside the room, drink a glass of water. Remember that you will be sweating bucket loads so drink up! You may bring a glass of water with you or some ice to wet your lips and your face if it gets too hot.

4. OIL UP - Massage some oil on your body when you are inside the room. Not only will this help prevent your skin from over drying, but depending on the oil that you use, the scent could be very soothing and therapeutic. So when choosing your oil, go to spas or beauty stores and check their aromatherapy oils. I personally use Lavander from Watsons, or Ellipse Body Oil in Morning Dew. I do not really spend a lot on these oils because you use a whole lot of them everyday. So buy one that is both natural and smells good.

5. SCALP & HAIR PROTECTION - Before entering the room, I massage my scalp with coconut milk. I buy this in the supermarket. Then, I wrap a damp towel around my head and enter the sauna.

6. ACTIVATE HEAT - Activate the sauna stones by splashing some water on it. Sauna rooms usually have scented water inside the room that you can use. The more water you pour, the hotter it is.

7. BENCH - There are 2 levels in the sauna room. If you sit on the higher bench, it is hotter than that of the lower one. I choose to lie facing down on the high bench.

8. INTERVALS - Stay for about minutes. You can't bring watches or anything mechanical in the sauna for this WILL break. Sauna rooms usually have hour glasses mounted on the wall. The standard is 12 minutes so stay until it about half-way finished. Take a cool shower and wash away the oil, sweat and dirt. Go back to the sauna and wipe water. Repeat about 3 or 4 times.

9. STEAM - If you would like to to do both the sauna and steam bath, you may do so. Just remember to cool down after each session and drink lots of water! If you feel light headed and dizzy, stop and catch some cool air. Rest and take a cool shower.

The Colored Eyeliner

Colored eyeliner can bring out your eyes far better than black or brown eyeliners. Colored liners are a great accent makeup that can be worn with minimal additional eye makeup if you wish, or can be "glammed up" with bright eye shadows and fun, bright lipstick. In this article, we will discuss how to wear colored eyeliner.

HOW TO WEAR COLORED EYELINER:

STEP 1: Lay out the outfit you are planning on wearing. It is important to make sure that your eyeliner does not clash with the outfit, particularly if you are wearing a bold liner such as a bright green, blue or pink. Darker tones like purples and raisins tend to match almost anything, as do metallics like gold and silver.

STEP 2: Hold the eyeliner and the top that you plan to wear next to your face.Make sure that you like the way the colors look together and that you also like the way your face looks in proximity to these colors. If you do not like the look, change either the top or the eyeliner color.

STEP 3: Apply your eye shadow. If you are going out during the day, you will probably wish to use neutral eye shadow or even a translucent powder. This will prevent your eyeliner from smearing but avoid attracting attention to the makeup instead of your eye.

STEP 4: Apply the eyeliner to your upper eyelid. Begin at the inside corner and use a smooth stroke to the outside corner. Do not press down on your eyelid. For a subtle, cat-eye effect do not follow the line of your lid back down but aim for the outside end of your eyebrow.

STEP 5: Apply the eyeliner directly under your lower lashes. Do not redip the eyeliner wand before this step. Start at the inside corner of the eye and move smoothly toward the outside corner.

STEP 6:
Keep your eyes half shut for a count of sixty. This will make sure that the liner has dried before you open your eyes. Opening them too soon can give you colored arcs at the top of your eyelid.

Here are a few of my favorite 'sticks!

Lancome Le Crayon Khol in CURACAO (this is what I used on Monique). A pencil that glides on easily, giving a metallic finish that is easy to smudge with its built in sponge-blender. Provides a playful look anytime of the day.

Elizabeth Arden Color Intrigue Gel Eyeliner with Brush in BRONZE PEARL. Soft smooth texture that glides on easily. Provides intense lustrous color to define your eyes.

Bourjois Khol & Contour Eyeliner Pencil in #08 ROSE FANTAISISTE. A slim pencil that contains high density color. This color helps brighten your eyes.

Guerlain Divinora Eyeliner in N.5 MAUVE PROFOND. An intensive beautiful eyeliner that contains plant oils to fortify lashes. Instantly provides a dramatic eye look.

Queen for a day... Every day!

I have wavy hair. But the bangs and the baby hairs are the worst. They tend to become really curly specially when I am in places that have such high humidity! Sometimes I would use tons of hairspray to tone it down, but the frizziness of my bangs still manage to fight the product!

In this picture on the right, you can see my "buhaghag" hair trying to stand up even though i secured my bangs already with a clip.

Usually in the morning after I shower at the gym, I apply a straightening serum to manage my baby hair, and tie it in a ponytail. When it dries and I see that my hair is starting to stand up, I use my sunglasses to cover them up or a head band! You will usually see me in a ponytail because I can't seem to manage my hair!

The only time you see me with my hair down is when I go out at night when I can let it loose and do whatever it wants. The wavier the better!

But one time at a shoot, I was working most of the morning and when I glanced at myself in the morning, I saw that my hair was all over the place, some were even standing! It was embarrassing. I didn't look neat at all, and it was even more humiliating that my livelihood depends on how we present outselves! Hahaha!

Luckily, hairstylist Bren was there at the shoot and I asked him how I could manage this unruly hair. He applied Bed Head's Superstar Queen for a day! product on my roots and massaged it on my scalp. He just brushed it up with his fingers and tied my hair with a hair tie and amazingly my baby hair went down!

He advises that I put this product on my hair just after showering so that when it dries, my hair wouldn't stand up. I love this product!! I should have asked Bren a long time ago about Bed Head's products considering that I am a loyal user of Bed Head's Uptight! Hahaha! Thanks Bren!

Ask Sabs: Is the smoky eye right for me?

Q: "Hi Sabs! I love how you do your smokey eyes on the girls in your blog. I know that you have already posted a few topics on this but here goes: I love make up but I am stuck with using just eyeliner. As a fashion student in La Salle, I would like to update my look into something more sophisticated. I have big round eyes and I am not sure if I can pull off the smokey eye look. What do you suggest? Thanks Sabs!" -Cha (send via Ask Sabs on April 25, 2009)

A:
Hi Cha!
The nice thing about the smokey eye is that it can suit just about anyone. Some girls are afraid that if their eyes are big, it will look bigger. Some would say that if they are chinita, it would make them even more chinita. I beg to disagree...

Margs, Kate and Daphne have different eye shapes and skin tones. I did the smokey eye on all 3 of them and the effect is different on each one. Depends on the color of your shadow, it can make jus about anyone look glam and sophosticated in an instant.

The smokey eye is even nice during the day. Having to do the smokey effect doesn't have to be limited with black, grey, silver, or brown. You can use colors such as shades of green, pink, purple or even blue!

Just keep in mind that depending on the intensity of your smokey eye, you should really know how to tone down your lips. If you have a light smokey eye, you can go a little bit darker on your puckers!

Just have fun and play around with makeup! The best thing about it is that you can erase it!

GET THE LOOK:

1. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize your face. Always start here.
2. Do your base as you would. Don't forget to highlight and contour but make it as natural looking as possible. Remember, you are not going on stage! (unless you are...)
3. Groom your eyebrows. These are your frames and they make the character of your look.
4. I like starting with the blush. Because depending on the shade of my blush will then I decide which colors would go best with it. Also, the blush tells people your mood. Are you feeling sultry? Romantic? Fierce?
5. Choose a shade of eyeshadow that is in the same color tone as your blush. Warm for warm, cool for cool.
5. Start with the darkest shadow of your color choice and blend from your lashlines to your creases. Then, with the medium shade of the same color family blend the edges of your dark shadow at the creases. Remember to blend! Then, with a bone color or anything that has a bit of shimmer: silver for cool, and gold for warm, highlight your brow bones for that extra UMPH!
6. Line your upper lash lines with an eye liner formula that you are used to. With a smudge proof pencil liner, line the inner rims of your eyes. If you feel a bit weird about this, skip this step and apply liner as close to your lashlines as possible and blend with a Q-Tip.
7. Gloss up your lips!

Thanks for your email Cha! Enjoy and hope to hear from you again soon!

YOUR BIG DAY: Well Manicured Hands

A lot of brides ask me during pre-trial meetings if having well manicured hands is important on their big day is. I say, very very important.

Your official wedding photographer is bound to take lots of pictures of the happy couple holding hands and showing off their new rings (some are pretty much in closeup mode). So chipped nails and chapped hands are obviously not an option. No PhotoShop software in the world can make dry hands look supple and well groomed.

To ensure your hands are smooth and your nails look strong and healthy, use a good hand cream every day for a month before the wedding and treat yourself to a regular manicure so unruly cuticles and soft/brittle nails can be sorted out in time for you wedding.

If you are anything like me who is a nail biter and have no time to grow your nails, go to a nail salon and inquire about nail extensions, sculptured nails or acrylic nails. These are temporary and they have different lengths too! You can go from short, medium, or long. They cost between PhP 80.00 to 100.00/finger depending on the nail salon you go to.

I have put together here some lovely bridal colors that you can choose from which are pretty much common for brides.

There are a lot of brands now that carry lovely pastel colors for brides. Take the time to browse the shelves and try them out before buying the one you want!

Make sure that you book days before your big day! Here are just a few reputable nail spas in Manila to help you get started:

Before Baring It All

I have had waxes before, but it was only this year before a recent trip to Boracay did I dare bare it all. My regular bikini waxer convinced me in removing everything for a fuzz and hassle free summer.

The moment it was over, it actually felt weird. I was sore for a couple of days, but I must admit that when we got to the beach, it really was hassle free. But as the days went by, I started to feel very uncomfortable. I guess It's because that there is nothing there to protect "you".

A month and a half later, the hair is still about 30% grown and it's getting quite uncomfortable. It even gets more uncomfortabel at night when the itching begins. Itching occurs when the hair start to grow back, this happenes whether you shave or you wax. This itching can sometimes get unbearable and can keep you awake.

I do not have any intention of getting another wax anytime soon so I am growing it fully and when it does, then I will just do the regular shaving. I just read in other health websites that continuous tugging and tearing of the delicate skin around and INSIDE your bikini area may cause some serious damage. Before getting a Brazilian wax, read on and consider it's dangers.

What is a Brazilian Wax?

Brazilian waxing refers to a removal of everything, front to back, while sometimes leaving a thin strip of hair on the pubis used by those who wear thong bikinis. An extreme form of bikini waxing, it involves complete removal of hair from the buttocks and adjacent to the anus, perineum and vulva (labia majora and mons pubis). Waxes that remove all of the pubic hair are known as a full Brazilian wax, full Bikini wax, Hollywood wax or the Sphinx.

What are the Potential Dangers of Brazilian Bikini Waxing?

It is important to learn about any potential dangers before you opt to receive any beauty treatment. While they may be rare, it is important to keep in mind that there are dangers which may be associated with receiving a Brazilian bikini wax. Some of the most common side effects that you are putting yourself at risk for when you decide to get a Brazilian bikini wax include yeast infections and bacterial infections. Although it is even more rare, there are some instances in which sexually transmitted diseases, such as herpes, have been spread through Brazilian bikini waxes. Some of the less serious but common side effects that can be caused through Brazilian bikini waxing include itchiness and skin which is blotchy in appearance. Luckily, however, there are several things which you can do in order to prevent these potential dangers and side effects if you are interested in getting a Brazilian bikini wax.

What should you know about this treatment?

The most important thing that you should keep in mind is that getting a Brazilian bikini wax is a lot unlike other hair removal treatments. You will probably experience a good amount of pain. In fact, many claim that they have never experienced anything more painful than a Brazilian bikini wax. Since you do experience pain, you cannot use pain as an indicator that something has gone wrong with your Brazilian bikini wax. One of the things that you should keep in mind, however, is that the person who is performing your Brazilian should never wax the same area more than once. Not only will you be likely to experience pain or irritation after your waxing session is over, but direct contact with the skin is a great way for bacteria to spread. If the person doing your Brazilian wants to reapply wax to the same area, it is important to make sure that you stop them.

So what should you do now?

If you are unsure if Brazilian waxing is right for you, consult your OB-Gyne. They know everything about taking care about your sensitive area. For the meantime, shave your bikini area first if you are going on a short beach trip!

- There are a lot of articles online now about the pros and cons of Brazilian waxing. Make sure that you know everything there is to know about waxing before you get one. I personally have learned my lesson on "baring it all", so next time I think I'll just stick with the regular bikini wax or a do-it-yourself trim and shave.

Kids, if you know other kids your age who are waxing, be sure to tell an adult!

Have a pain-free summer!

THE BRAID: Fun Hairstyle for Summer!

Braiding is a fun and fashionable way to do hair. There are several types of braids. This article will tell you how to do a simple braid, a French braid, an inside out braid, a German braid and a fishbone braid.

To do a simple braid pull all the hair back, you may want to secure it with a rubber band. Divide the hair into three sections. Take the right section of hair over the middle section, now take the left section over the middle one. Alternate the right and left sections until you reach the end of the hair. Now band or clip it to keep it in place.

A French braid is the next most popular braid. To do this braid, start at the very top and take three small, but equal sections of hair from the front. Begin braiding by moving the right to the middle and then the left. In your right hand pick up a little more hair and move this into the middle. With your left hand pick up more hair and move it to the middle. Continue alternating, each time picking up a little more hair on the side. When you come to the bottom of the head you should have picked up all the hair. Now just continue with the rest of the hair like the simple braid. This braid will probably take a great deal of practice. Some hints to make this braid look good are to begin the braid with most of the hair from the top of the head and then each time you gather more hair get even amount all the way down.

An inside out braid is basically a French braid done inside out. Gather the first three sections of hair, but instead of going over the middle section go under and make sure it is pulled kind of tight, but be careful not to pull hard on the scalp. Continue by picking up a little more hair each time and taking each section, alternating right and left, under the middle one. This will produce a braid that sticks out off the head.

A German braid is done by taking a section just above one ear and braiding over to the other ear. Like the French braid you gather more hair each time you move the sections to the middle, but with this braid you only gather a very tiny amount of new hair. Only pick up the areas of hair right next to the braid. Continue over the head to the other ear and then down to the end of the hair and band or clip. This headband effect will hold all the hair out of the face even though most of it still loose.

Fishbone braid is done by dividing all the hair into two sections. Take a very small section from the top of the right side and add it to the left. Don’t keep it separate after that. Take a small section of hair from the top left and add it to the right. Continue to go back and forth working all the hair in. Keep it tight. Work down the head and continue in the same way until you have reached the bottom of the hair, band or clip. This braid is very impressive looking especially if use very tiny amounts of hair, but it can take a very long time to complete.

Zet Sarra Trial Hair and Makeup

My lovely November '09 bride from Abu Dhabi, she's a flight attendant and is as lovely as she seems when we were emailing each other to book her Tagaytay wedding.

Today was Zet's trial hair and makeup session, and it is the first time we met as well. We spent the first 20 minutes discussing her gown, hair, and makeup looks before we got started.

Zet wanted to do a smokey eye because she's not so much of a lipstick fan, which was also a wise choice. After the airbrush makeup, I did the smokey eye but not in the typical black or grey. I used shades like old rose, bronze, and brown. She was having an outdoor wedding so I think the shades would suit that.

I highlighted the inner part of her eyes with an old rose shade of shadow with a slight shimmer. This emphasized her cat-eye shaped eyes so much more.

The blush is a delicate shade of old rose as well.

Zet has a set of great looking brows so not much product was needed to shape and emphasize it. I used MAC's brow mascara to thicken it.

Lancome's Color Fever Shine lipstick in a blushing brownish pink was the perfect product for Zet. It's sheer and has shimmer which would be perfect for someone who's not used to using high-pigmented lip colors.

Hairstylist Tony Dusich did 2 options for her bridal hair that would go perfect with her lace gown and outdoor-venue setting. I love that Tony is willing to do options during trial to show my brides different looks for her wedding day. He tells brides if the hairstyle that she wants would suit her and would make suggestions.
