Blushing with MAC Riri Blush Duo in Hibiscus Kiss (Product Review and Swatches)

#faceitwednesdays

This is my first MAC blush duo so I am very excited to try it on! I am a fan of blush that has two shades combined no matter what brand. I think that it is the perfect solution to solve the "which blush would suit my skin tone best?" dilemma. I love that blush duos look good either for fair skinned women or morenas.

These cosmetic companies combine two shades together: warm and cool tone. Usually these duos combine a bronzer that is complemented with a cool toned blush that blend well together, and the result will just be flawless.

MAC Riri Blush Duo in Hibiscus Kiss, PhP 1,575
When I received this blush from MAC, I resisted the urge to use it right away since I still had a blush that I needed to finish. I just love the feeling every time I hit pan! (giggle)

Splurge vs. Steal (Series 4)

Hey ladies! I'm back with another series of Splurge vs. Steal! Sorry it took me a while to post a new one... I had to compile, use, assess and test each product! But anyway, I finally did it and I am here to share with you my latest "discoveries"!

I can't emphasize this more: When I do the Splurge vs. Steal series, I do not indicate which is the better product or which is superior. This is for those who would like to get same results for a lower price tag.

1. BENEFIT Porefessional (P1,600) vs. MAYBELLINE Pore Eraser (P229)

I'm not much of a pore eraser kind of girl but when I tried Benefit's Porefessional, I was impressed! I never put on makeup without it now. My first tube was about to run out and I wanted to look for an alternative so that I can compare the two. I have tried 3 other pore refining products that you can use before makeup but only one stood out, and that was Maybelline's Pore Eraser.

The Forgotten Mr. Brown

Most women think that brown eyeshadow is only for contouring, only for the creases, and nothing else. The glossies now are filled with colored eyeliners and shadows that poor Mr. Brown is feeling left out. The classic shades of brown's earthy characteristics make it very wearable either for the day or for the evening. Also, for women who prefer to stay away from the spotlight, brown eyeshadow doesn't scream "HEY!". Brown doesn't have to be worn matte and boring.

Allow me to show you this how-to video on how you can wear the classic brown shadow for a night out and sport the Hollywood Glam look!

Splurge vs. Steal (Series 3)

I had so much time to kill so I was able to drop by the department store today to shop for the third series of Splurge vs. Steal. So notebook in hand, I was able to shop for 5 more items to show you!

I had to use some stock photos for some of the products because my product shots suck! LOL Enjoy!

1. MAC Wipes (P1,500/100 pcs.) vs. SkinLite Make-up Cleansing Tissues (P99.75/30 pcs.)

The first on my list is SkinLite's Make-up Cleansing Tissues. I have been using this for a while for my clients because it's very gentle on the skin. When I was starting out as a makeup artist, I remember investing in MAC Wipes, and after being years in the industry, it was just silly to spend that much for wipes.

I have tried a few makeup remover wipes in the market, and this is the one that came closest to MAC. Well... Except the scent. MAC has a subtle fresh scent while SkinLite has kind of an aloe, tea-tree oil scent to it. It smells good, it's just a little far from that of MAC's.

Splurge vs. Steal (Series 2)

Back by popular demand, I was able to compile a few more products from my notes to compare for the Splurge vs. Steal Series! Enjoy!

1. Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer (P2,250) vs. ELF Mineral Infused Face Primer (P495)

For all you ladies who are addicted to face primers, ELF may be a good alternative for you. And to some who find having to put primers on the face makes the foundation cakey, that just means you have layered on too much.

LOTD: Lissa's Wedding Day Look!

Already, I received almost 10 emails about my bride Lissa Exaltacion's makeup look after I posted her photo in my website last night when I got home from Bulacan to do her wedding. Women asking me what products I used to do her makeup.

Well, ladies! Here are the products I used:

FACE: Lissa has very oily skin. So I airbrushed Lissa's face with OCC's water-based airbrush foundation in Y1, and set it with Face to Face Color Corrective Powder in Yellow. Color correcting powders are ok as long as they are milled super fine as to not reflect on camera.

*tip: Use MAC's #224 tapered blending brush to smooth powder in the eye area to avoid caking.

EYES: For Lissa's eyebrows, I used Christian Semi Permanent eyebrow powder in Dark Brown mixed with Charcoal. Since Lissa's hair is not dyed and was more black than it is dark brown, I had to make her brows blend. Black eyebrows are too harsh.

*pro tip: Don't be afraid to mix colors and products! This is the only way you will find the perfect shade you are looking for. As for brushes? I used to use Fanny Serrano's slanted brow brush but then, I discovered that using a softer smaller brush will make a more precise and well blended brow! I now use Shu Uemura's 4F brush for the brows.

For Lissa's lids, I used LancĂ´me's Colour Design Eyeshadow in Kitten Heel blended with MAC eyeshadow in Rule and Sushi Flower. Softly blend together to create that nice soft coral color. Then I lined her eyes with MAC's Fluidline in Blacktrack using a MAC precise liner brush #210.

*tip: apply with a smaller brush rather than with a big flat brush. Smaller brushes give precision on where you deposit color. Use a rounded fluffy eyeshadow blending brush like #217 or #224 from MAC. Lightly swirl your brush on the edges of your applied eye shadow to soften the edges.

CHEEKS: I defined Lissa's cheekbones with a matte bronzer. I didn't contour heavily though, I just brushed enough to give her cheeks and temples some color. I used MUD's Matte Bronzer in Sunshine. I dusted the apples of her cheeks with NARS' blush in Orgasm.

*tip: When bronzing your cheekbones, use a bronzer that is, #1 not to orange, and #2 is matte. This will give your face an instant lift, and depth on your cheeks when needed. Shimmer will only attract light making the area look protruding.

LIPS: Mixing lipstick is the perfect way to get shades that would look perfect on you. Has it happened to you, when you are putting on your favorite lipstick and suddenly wish if it were just a tad more pink? Or maybe orange? or a little bit on the blue side maybe? The only solution is for you to mix shades to get that perfect color! I mixed MAC Lipstick in Please Me with Prestige's Beautifully Buff.

*tip: Always use a spatula and a palette to mix foundations and other cream products. Stainless steel palettes and spatulas are easier to clean. By using a spatula to scoop out product from pots and tubes, you preserve the product, and you avoid transferring bacteria to it. It's just like avoiding double dipping your tortilla chips in the salsa! I use Cinema Secret's Stainless Steel Palette and Spatula from Proface Palette (www.proface.ph)

Thanks for the emails ladies! Keep 'em coming!

The Big Switch

For years, I have been using Makeup Forever's Brush Cleaner... But as the months/years went by, it got harder and harder to wait for the supply to come (*tear*), every time it was out of stock, I would use Beauty Bar's own brand of Makeup brush cleaner but I found it a little bit too oily. I was too stubborn to try anything else after that... So instead of cleaning my brushes every after use with an instant cleaner like Makeup Forever's, I would wash them every time with shampoo and leave them over night to dry on my brush rack. It was soooo hard.

Finally, I was running out of shampoo and got tired of running to the supermarket to get some. I finally bit the bullet and got myself a bottle of MAC's brush cleaner. I used it immediately as soon as I got home from working behind the curtains at Metro Society's fashion show last night. And lo and behold, I was really happy with it! It doesn't smell like alcohol like most cleaners do, and it doesn't dry the brush hairs. So now I am back to shampooing my precious brushes every 4 days, and cleaning them with an instant cleanser after each use.

Will definitely grab myself another bottle before this one runs out.

Shopping Spree

Today after my shoot, I went on a shopping spree and bought 5 new shades of eye shadows from MAC. I was always scrambling around my makeup kit when I am at work looking for matte shades for brides and always failed. I would always substitue with something else so finally, in spite of my aching back, legs and feet from a whole afternoon of shooting, I went to Glorietta and bought myself a whole set of shades that I always wished I had!!

Thank goodness my sister was in my condo when I arrived so I tested my new products on her... yes, complete with foundation and false eyelashes!

I used 4 shades on her eyes, and the 5th shade was just plain black so I used it only on her lash lines.

I created a bridal look that was lightly heavy on the eyes. I just wanted to do this because brides are always afraid to use eyeliner, afraid that they might look "too made up" or "too dramatic". So, this is just to show women out there that eyeliner is always, always, always a best option. It looks best in pictures too.

Of course, the decision is always up to my brides because I want them to not only look their best on their big day, but to be comfortable with the makeup as much as possible.
