Michelle Lim Trial Makeup

Michelle is such a lovely girl! She has the height of a model! Hehehe... I actually had to tip toe to take her picture :) Anyway, Michelle wanted to go for the traditional makeup but I convinced her to try airbrush.

I wanted to give her that natural look for her wedding so that the makeup "shouting" and "straight forward". I wanted her to still look like her, and radiant without a whole lot of products.

Kit Gamboa Trial Makeup

My beautiful March bride Kit, had her trial makeup session with me today. I must say, I love her skin tone! Kit has fair skin and a cool tone which made the smokey eye look cool as well. It didn't look heavy at all.

Mocha blush and dark eyeshadow was the perfect look for her. Of course, she chose this look and it suits her!

I am doing airbrush makeup on her on her wedding day.

Full Bangs

One of the most controversial elements of full bangs is whether to call them "bangs" or call them "fringes". In the United States bangs are the common word for hair that fully or partially covers the forehead area of the face.

In England and other European countries bangs have a slang related meaning that is considered "off color". For those countries the word used to describe forehead hair is "fringes".

Regardless of what term you prefer to use, forehead hair, like everything in the hair world, has its style trends and general rules.

Although the hair bang cycles in and out of favor depending on fashion trends and other related style indicators, they tend to look good on just about anyone ranging from babies to boomers of any age. So why are they consider the one-stop-hair-trend for all? Mainly because they can be created to scale from long to short, side-swept to full frontal blunt or a variety in-between.

Bangs can be worn to minimize large foreheads, help control annoying cowlicks or disguise forehead lines. They work in harmony with a wide range of hair accessories from headbands to clips.

What else should you note about bangs? They can be an instant fix for a bad haircut or a decision that is made in haste and repented in leisure because bangs can be challenging to deal with during the sort-to-long phases.

Caring for your layered hair!

Getting a style done is a matter of visiting a stylist and having them work on the hair to bring about a creative difference to one's personality.

Well, after cutting and styling the final blow dry is what makes the hair look stunning, till one washes it at home. This is the point from where one has to begin the task of caring for layered hairstyles. And it is not too difficult to do so; nor is it too time consuming.

For many caring for their layers, is about simply washing, drying and combing; professional stylists insist that there is a little more. For instance, whether the hair is damaged or not, one should ideally use a leave on conditioner, or hair serum after wash to ensure that pollutants and weather changes do no affect the texture of the hair.

Apart from that even the type of shampoo and conditioner needs to be taken into consideration. This is important, as sometimes getting carried away by brands and fragrances can end up damaging the hair far more than expected. Thus, it is vital to consult a specialist before making the purchase, as they would recommend the hair wash product according to the damage level and texture of the hair.

When it comes to colored, damaged hair, one needs to ensure that moisture rich shampoo and conditioner is used, along with a non-greasy leave in conditioner or hair serum.

Apart from that one should avoid blow-drying the hair too often. One should also oil the hair, by massaging the scalp with warm oil, before every wash.

Summer's Here!!

In a few months, it'll be summer! I love the summer (and spring too!) because this is the time of the year to wear lovely pastel shadows and bright lipsticks!

If some of you haven't noticed yet, I love applying green eyeshadow on fair skin. On the other hand, this shade looks good on morenas as well! On the photo I attached, I did the makeup for my cousin's friend Lorrie while her sister took photos (they look pro! hahaha!). We did the make over at her house in time for her school graduation photo that day, so we had to do her makeup early in the morning.

My client, Lorrie, had fair skin. She is used to wearing the basic nudes and browns, and I just thought that doing a fresh look on her grad photos would look best. She was a bit skeptic at first but I assured her that if she didn't like it, we could always change it. Meanwhile, 1 year later... She still does this look for work, gimmicks, and the mall sometimes when she's in the mood!

Keep your foundation light. If you can get away by wearing just tinted moisturizer, do so! This is the perfect time to be wearing it since heavier foundations are reserved for cooler days. Slightly powder your face to set it.

Make your blush bright and blushing. Show your summer glow by using bronzers and blushes that are rich in color! Of course, balancing applies when you wear this look. Avoid making everything look heavy. Assess what feature you would like to emphasize that day.

Wear something vibrant this summer! Don't be afraid to experiment at the cosmetic counters because that's what they're there for! Just remember to load up on mascara because pastels can washout your lashes.

Have a colorful summer!!

Marie Sabine Trial Hair and Makeup

Binnie sent me this picture from our trial makeup session. She only wanted her hair down because they were going to Tagaytay for their pre-nuptial photoshoot.

I used airbrush on her. Binnie wanted a fresh makeup look for her wedding. Just some eyeliner and mascara, a whole lotta blush and very pale pink glossy lips.

Oriental Eyes

"Sabs!

Loving your blog! I love makeup and I need your help! I am Chinese and I have chinky eyes but not so much. I need help on how I can emphasize on my eyes without making them look smaller or trying hard to make them look bigger. How can I achieve this? Thanks Sabs!! -Dianna"

Hi Dianna!

I had a model (in photo) who had sort-of chinky eyes. I had to look for her photo in my other email accounts so I can show you! Haha! But here it is! My model, Kim was only 16 when we shot this. She is half Japanese.

As many Asian women will know, black eye pencils have always been used to define their eyes. Today however, eye makeup for Asian eyes also includes other shades and mediums.

  1. When applying eye makeup for Asians, it is always wise to remember that you do have options. Using a combination of eyeliner pencil, liquid eyeliner, and eye shadow will always add definition and sophistication to your eyes. Make the most of these items.
  2. There are a number of different shades of blacks and browns so eye makeup for Asian eyes does not have to be plain. Why not try an espresso color, or one that has a glint of sparkle in it.
  3. Dramatic eye makeup application can include adding a touch of color. Asian eyes look great in shades of plum and raisin.
  4. Graduating your eye makeup from your eyelash line to your eyebrow will help to give your eyes more depth. For this to look great, you should use the darkest shade along your eyelash line and merge this into lighter shades of color nearer your eyebrow.
  5. Another of our Asian eye make up tips is creating different eye shapes. When applying eye makeup for Asians you can use dark colors to minimize the shape of the eyes and light colors to make them appear larger.
  6. Asian eyes are very versatile when it comes to color accents. You can compliment your brown Asian eyes by using shades of pale pink. You can also accent your eyes by using gold and rust colors.

When it comes to eye make up for Asian eyes you should always remember that for Asians their eyes are the most important feature and special attention should be given to them. When looking at Asian eye makeup tips, you will always see that black mascara and black eyeliner at the best for enhancing your eyes. This is because the mascara and eyeliner that is used in eye makeup for Asian eyes helps to enhance their almond shaped eyes.

Eye shadow can also play an important factor when it comes to Asian eye makeup. Our Asian eye makeup tips for eye shadow are also very simple and easy to follow.

  1. When choosing your eye shadow color you will need to look at the amount of fold you have above the eye lid.
  2. A lot of fold is essential for dramatic eye makeup and color such as black, deep purple, and navy blue will look stunning especially at night time.
  3. Use multi-layering of your eye shadow colors to enhance your look.

As you can see from eye makeup application tips, black is not the only color that you can choose from. There are many ways to create dramatic eye makeup for Asian eyes; all you have to do is experiment.

Most importantly, have fun with makeup! The beauty of it is that you can just wash it off right after!

ENJOY!

Summer Hues

Summer is my favorite season: I love that everything--including makeup--is more relaxed. This year, the summer makeup trends are good enough to eat, with Popsicle-like pastels, creamy caramels, and cotton candy pinks. We've decoded the colors for you; all you have to do is choose which look suits your style and how subtle or strong you want it to be.

  • Simple Style: Keep eyes light with a skin-toned shadow. Then dab pink blush on cheeks. The darker your skin tone, the richer the shade should be. Use the same rule for lips, but first slick on a lip balm with a built-in SPF to protect against damaging UV rays, then blot on gloss or lipstick with your fingertip for a stained effect.

  • Stronger Statement: Dust pale pink shadow on eyes and edge your lash line with a black, dark brown, or navy gel-based liner; Finish with black waterproof mascara. Keep cheeks sheer with a berry-toned blush. But to prevent color from creeping, top with a pink powder highlighter on cheekbones. For lasting color, outline and fill in lips with a Popsicle-pink liner. Then use a similar shade gloss.

    Welcome Matte!

    MATTE IS IN!

For as long as we can remember, make-up has been all about shimmer, sparkle and iridescence, but 1940’s glamour is back. Matte make-up doesn’t have to be dull: rich berries, tawny nudes, powdery pinks and smoky blacks are making their way to a fall palette near you.

I know it’ll be hard to kick the glitter habit, so I put together the ultimate collection of affordable matte makeup to motivate you to make the change.

Glowing skin and glittery liner will make a comeback for the holidays, but for now store the all-over shimmer with your wedge shoes.

    Maybelline's Dream Matte Mousse Foundation

MAC Paint Pots in Quite Natural (The shade I used on the model)

Revlon Powder Blush in Toast of New York

Makeup Forever Matte Lip (mattify all your lipsticks with this amazing product!)

Lancome Pure Focus T-Zone. Starting to oil up? Apply this gel over your makeup and keep a mattified fresh face!

    Your Grad-Ball Look!

    "Hi Ms. Sabs,

I love this part of your blog! College ball is approaching. I've been checking out mags and a lot of times, when I like certain makeup looks, I learn that you're the makeup artist! That's why I searched for you online. I noticed how "glowing" your models are in beauty features. I don't know how to use pastels as eyeshadow. I always attempt to recreate the "sweet look" I find in teen and young girls' magazines like Candy. I don't know how to make the soft look! is it silver eyeliner you're using in the lower lids? and i don't know how to make the blush look shiny/glowing.:( hope you can help me! I'll be wearing a cotton candy pink dress on my grad ball. THANKS SO MUCH. Superrr.

    -Eunice Amara
    "

    Hi Eunice!

Thanks for your letter! If you do plan to do your own makeup during your grad ball, I would suggest that you practice weeks before the big day. I would collect pictures of the looks that I want and I would keep practicing until I perfect the one look that I really really want.

It said in your email that you liked the beauty looks that I did for Candy. I compiled 2 looks here from beauty editorials that I have shot in the past and talk to you how I created the look on these models.

If you feel that after you have done these looks and you still feel that your makeup is not as nice as the ones on the models, please remember that these photos have already undergone some minor retouches and some pro photoshoping. I have had girls email me before that they would like to look like the models and celebs in the magazines but let me tell you know that we have shot roughly about 100+ frames with a professional photographer who uses tons of lights, reflectors, and other pro equipment to get the 1 shot that looks perfect. We stay behind the scenes during the entire shoot to retouch makeup and put every hair in place after a couple of shots. These pros behind the camera also does a whole lotta work on post production before they are published. So don't get discouraged :) I also put here products for your to try that is budget friendly for your age group. I don't only recommend high end products so don't worry about having to spend a whole lot in creating your gradball look.

The looks I will show you (which I feel that would go perfectly with your pink prom dress) is the one from Seventeen Mag (upper right) and Candy magazine (below left). It's really just a matter of the shades of eyeshadows that you would use, but the makeup aplication is basically just the same:

    STEP 1

Start by washing your face with cold water. This will help minimize the pores and will wake your skin up! On some of my brides, I advise them to rub ice on their face specially on the eye area to reduce puffiness and so that their skin will look alive!

Ice can be very drying, so remember to always, always, always moisturize before makeup. You can skip the toner if you haven't worn makeup that day.

Allow your moisturizer to set for about 5 minutes before you start with your base.

    STEP 2

If you would like a flawless and perfect base, don't scrimp on a good foundation. Invest in a brand that makes great foundation formulas and that matches your skin color and tone perfectly. When buying, make sure that you check the shade outside on the street where there is natural light. Department store lights messes up your real skin color, and women always end up buying the wrong shade.

    STEP 3

Apply your foundation with a stippling brush, foundation brush or a makeup sponge. These tools will ensure even application. The best tool I have discovered however are your hands! Your hands actually "melt" and warm the foundation a little bit that makes it even more blendable and makes the foundation look like it is pressed on the skin.

Spot conceal any areas on your face that needs coverage. Use a concealer that is about a half a shade lighter than your skin color.

    STEP 4

Lightly dust your skin with a loose powder that has a yellow base with a big powder brush. This product will set your foundation in place, and will make it resistant to water.

    STEP 5

If you were wondering what blush I used that is a bit shiny but not exactly a shimmer product, I use blushes that have an iridescent finish. Iridescence is the property of certain surfaces to change their colour depending on the angle under which they are viewed. So it's not exactly glitters or shimmers, it's a product that has very fine reflective properties. There are a lot of brands that carry this now so just ask the counter for a blush that is iridescent. My favorite? Try Body Shop's Blushing Dasies!

    STEP 6

The eye shadow I used on the Candy editorial is a theater product that is very very thick. The pigment is very high so that it will show on camera. So if you were to use a white shimmer eye shadow, don't panic if it doesn't look like the one from the picture. Wash your entire lid from lashlines up until the browbones, and blend very well. I used MAC's White Frost. Try Lancome's Color Design in Creme Lustre.

    Step 7

I used false eyelashes on these models that's why their lashes look lush, long, and extremely full. If you are not an expert in wearing falsies, there is a wide variety of cosmetic brands that carry great mascaras now that can give you the same effect! Just apply 2 to 3 coats of mascara, allowing a minute for the product to dry after each application. Try Maybelline's Great Lash Waterproof Mascara.

    Step 8

For the lips use a lip pencil as your base so that the color will stay on all night. Line your lips with the pencil, and fill it in with the same pencil. Then, top your lips with a gloss of your choice! Try Lancome's Color Fever Gloss. For the pencil, try The Face Shop's autoatic lip liner pencil in Warm Pink.

I hope I was able to help you out! Just remember to practice and be patient. Take time to browse through product and try them on! When you do try on products, make sure that you step out where there is natural light and check the real color. Department lights can play tricks on your eyes :)

    Have fun!!

Tinting your brows with Sally Hansen!

Originally, Sally Hansen's Eyebrow bleach is used for bleaching unwanted hair until the hair pigments get completely stripped that they become white or "invisible". Now, let me teach you how to use the same bleach to tint your brows to match your hair and brighten your face!

Sally Hansen Fast and Gentle Cream Hair Bleach for Face is actually a hair bleaching set composed of a tub of almond-scented hair bleach, a vial of powdery baking soda activator (it has a nauseating, caustic smell so don’t bother to sniff this), a small spatula and a small square mixing tray. Instructions are found on the product’s leaflet and on the Sally Hansen website.

Since I have really dark and thick brows, I put a generous amount of the bleaching cream and baking soda activator mixture and left it for about 8 minutes. I immediately washed it off and voila— my brows now matches my highlighted hair! If this is your first time, start by leaving it on for 3 minutes and check after every minute to get the level of lightness you want for your brows. Remember! Your eyebrows are just supposed to be about a half shade lighter than your current hair color.

How to achieve the dewy skin look

    Thanks Ms. Sabs,

Your blog inspired me to pursue my passion for makeup. I've always been a closet kikay. THANK YOU so much for all the tips. I have yet to really study makeup artistry but I enjoy reading your "tips." Do you have recommendations for foundation brands? I don't know how to make my skin look flawless and a bit dewy. I notice how many magazine looks appear to be porcelain-look? Hope you can share the good brands to use.

    Thank you!!

    Anj

    Instructions

Hi Anj! Here are 3 simple steps to achieve the dewy look! It's very easy to follow so enjoy!

    Step1
If you have super clear skin, get a glow by applying a sheer tinted moisturizer to your entire face and skipping the powder. If not, use your usual foundation and spot conceal on areas needed. If you feel comfortable about skipping the powder, do so. If not, lightly dust an iridescent loose powder on your foreheadm chin, and cheekbones. Then powder your entire face with a translucent powder. Just a very thin layer.

    Step2
Blend a blush into the apples of your cheeks that has iridescent finish. A lot of makeup brands carry these now so take your pick. Choose one that doesn't have visible shimmers. These will only look like dust on your skin. Specially glitters.

    Step3
If you have some things going on with your skin you'd like to hide, apply a liquid foundation to your entire face, and then dust with loose powder. Finish by lightly spritzing your face with a hydrating mist, or simply water from an atomizer. Lightly pat off excess water and let dry for about a minute. This will give your skin a dewy look and will also set your makeup that lasts all day!

For products, there are a lot of brands out there that carry good foundations, it's just a matter of finding the right formula and shade for your skin tone. It's ok to scrimp on other makeup products such as blush and eye shadows, but you need to splurge on a good makeup base. I personally use Lancome foundations. On days that I just go the mall or on shoots that require me to put on a little makeup on my face, I use Neutrogena's Mineral Sheers. This is a powder that gives great coverage and has a dewy finish!

    Get Goddess Hair!

    BIG, Sexy, Romantic Curls

Many women with long hair complain a lot about the lack of styling options. They are tired of the straight hairstyle, ponytails, and chignons. The complaint is that to change their look will always require a lot of work and seldom gives satisfactory results.

Here is a great and easy way for a soft, romantic look that's very easy to do, with a free, unconstructed curl that has a very stylish, up-to-date feel. Of course, it takes some practicing too. These instructions work well with hair that is either all-one-length or cut into long layers. Thanks to hairstylist Lynne Chapman, I was able to use this easy tip on Carolina for our shoot with Pocholo Ignacio!

Long, shiny hair with big individual curls, is always in style and while this great look takes a little styling effort, it is well worth it.

Start by shampooing your hair and conditioning with a light (not too strong) conditioner.
Next, divide your towel-dried hair into five sections and secure it with clips or bobby pins.

Starting with section #5, apply a styling gel or lotion, to add texture, and begin to dry that section using a large round brush and your blow dryer, directing the air flow downward, flowing from the root to the ends. The air direction and round brush produce a sleek shine. Dry section #5 thoroughly before continuing on to sections #4, #3, #2 and then #1 using the same technique and remembering to apply a styling gel or lotion to each section.
At this point, you should have very smooth, shiny hair but if the drying technique frustrates you, don’t worry about it, just make sure your hair is completely dry through out.

To finish creating the style, you will need a set of heated, bendable rollers.

Start with an approximate three-inch square section at the crown. Take the ends of the hair and wrap them around the roller.

Complete the set by rolling all of the rest of the hair in three-inch square sections with the exception of a one-inch section around the face. You will use a curling iron to put soft waves into this area while the rollers are cooling. This is done by holding the curling iron in a vertical position and rolling the hair toward your face. It isn’t necessary to put a lot of curl into this hair, just a soft bend.

Remove the rollers when they are cool and finish your style by turning your head upside down and running your fingers through the curls. Flip your hair back right side up and smooth slightly, using only your fingers and you will have achieved big, sexy, romantic curls. And without a lot of work!

    Lancome's Newest!

Lancome has always been known for great skin care and mascaras. Now, here are 3 more reasons to try Lancome's Oscillation Mascara! The mascara with the shakes!

    1. The Formula is Great!

The Oscillation mascara formula is Lancome's best yet! You can see that at first glance, because there's no clumping on the wand when you remove it from the mascara tube. With other mascaras, what happens is, if you apply too many coats of the product, your eyelashes stick together. With some kind of a restraint, but I found that you can achieve the same fullness with Oscillation with just one coat without the clumps!

    2. The Wand Vibrates!

With it's new vibrating wand, you can cover even the smallest hairs. You get to coat each lash with the same amount of product making your lashes full evenly.

    3. It's easily removable

I experimented on Oscillation by applying it seven times and used different mascara and make-up removers to wipe it away. Of course, the more layers of mascara you apply, the more remover you use getting the mascara off. Just pour about a pea size amount of makeup remover on your fingertips and massage it around your eye area. After washing your face, use pre-moistened wipes to remove excess mascara product. I prefer using wet-ones cloths and they work just fine to remove the Oscillation mascara.

Visit our Lancome store at Greenbelt 5 to try Oscillation Mascara!
