Summer Hues

Summer is my favorite season: I love that everything--including makeup--is more relaxed. This year, the summer makeup trends are good enough to eat, with Popsicle-like pastels, creamy caramels, and cotton candy pinks. We've decoded the colors for you; all you have to do is choose which look suits your style and how subtle or strong you want it to be.

  • Simple Style: Keep eyes light with a skin-toned shadow. Then dab pink blush on cheeks. The darker your skin tone, the richer the shade should be. Use the same rule for lips, but first slick on a lip balm with a built-in SPF to protect against damaging UV rays, then blot on gloss or lipstick with your fingertip for a stained effect.

  • Stronger Statement: Dust pale pink shadow on eyes and edge your lash line with a black, dark brown, or navy gel-based liner; Finish with black waterproof mascara. Keep cheeks sheer with a berry-toned blush. But to prevent color from creeping, top with a pink powder highlighter on cheekbones. For lasting color, outline and fill in lips with a Popsicle-pink liner. Then use a similar shade gloss.
